what video editing software can i use with my hanycam camcorder?

i have a dvd handycam and apparently i need sony software to transfer the video onto my comp and i cant use movie maker for editing. i was thinking of just getting a basic version of the Sony Vegas software.
is there anything comparable but free or very cheap that will work with these video files? i dont need anything real fancy and i dont want to mess with converters to try to convert the files to something readable by windows movie maker.

Which can convert most video & audio file types. Typically I download a youtube videos and switch them to .mpg applying this software. It may also convert into .3gp, you too can specify exactly what devices you may put this .3gp so that it will match the hardware. Enjoy watching movies on your own cell phones anywhere, anytime!
