Of the three you have listed here, Sony Vegas platinum edition would best suit your needs. Adobe Premiere is a good second choice. Personally I find Avid too hard to use and extremely overpriced for what you get.

In my opinion Sony Vegas has the most special effect options, in the lowest price bracket. It is simple to use and very powerful. It also has the best audio editing capabilities of the three programs you have listed here. I use Vegas Pro 8 daily, as well as Final Cut. Between the two, I prefer Vegas for most tasks.

If you are going to be working with a lot of still images, Premiere Elements bundled with Photoshop elements is a very good choice.

This is my opinion as of 9/9/08. Video equipment changes literally daily and yesterdays top of the line is todays obsolete junk.

The best set up of all is Final Cut Studio on a Mac Pro

The best for Windows is either Adobe Premier Pro with After Effects or Avid with After Effects.

It should be noted that Final Cut Studio is better and cheaper than either Premier Pro or Avid.

adobe premier for real Hollywood stuff or final cut pro – these allow you to do all the green screen techniques (you would know this if you are a pro at videos). if you go for premier make sure you got enough RAM and graphics because thses are "heavy" programs but but Ulead video studio is also good (and far cheaper). however Ulead does not have really "cool" effects, no green screen and is for the average home video maker. other alternatives are Cyberlink and windows movie maker and they are not bad

The best is Avid on either Mac or PC. It is the industry standard and most Hollywood films are cut using Avid. Final Cut is not bad. Premiere is on its way out.
