** @BuBaH, Premiere Pro wasn’t used to edit it. The creative editing for AVATAR is done using an AVID based system, Premiere Pro is able to read in cut-lists and other important metadata using its built-in AVID “AAF” import feature.**

Well the only other PROFESSIONAL and I mean REALLY PRO editing software is Avid Media Composer Nitris DX. Now the retail version, the highest grade version (used for feature films) is around $15,000. But, you can get a lower grade educational version (if your a student) called "Avid Media Composer." This is still really good software. It has a completely different interface and style than final cut pro, which is good since you said you have had bad experiences with FCP. It can do everything FCP can plus more. Go to http://www.academicsuperstore.com and search "Avid Media Composer" Its like $300. I also suggest buying the 3rd party plugins for the software too. (Around 300).

Avid Media Composer (edu version) is the cheapest PRO software you’ll find. Editors working on major motion pictures use this software the most.
*** the edu. version is exactly the same and the commercial version, its just $2000 cheaper than Avid Media Composer

I’ve had horrible experiences with FinalCut too. Adobe Premiere Pro is the best I’ve used, it’s less frustrating and more intuitive than FinalCut, more user friendly than Avid, more options then Pinnacle, and more professional than Vegas. The entire Adobe Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro, was the editing software of choice on James Cameron’s movie AVATAR that just came out, so it’s definitely professional, and it’s very affordable. You can buy Mac or PC versions.

I don’t know if this will be something for you, but if you can use it, Studica is able to get you great discounts on Adobe Creative Suite 4 (most recent) for the Mac (and PC), taking the expense off a tad (with Studica, you can get it for $400-$600 USD, normally sells for close to $700 USD). That’s the entire suite, including the most recent versions of AfterEffects, Photoshop, SoundBooth, InDesign, etc. etc.

If you just want Premiere Pro, which is the Adobe equivalent to FinalCut (but better in my experience), then you can probably find versions of it (mainly CS3) online for less than $200 used or new. I reccomend getting CS3 or CS4, both are fantastic. Plus, there’s plenty of training videos, downloadable templates, and technique podcasts out there for any question you have. Adobe has an awesome online community for that stuff.

I’ve included below the Adobe products for Mac that I found online when researching the prices, I hope you find it helpful:
