Go Open Source or Go Home

www.twitter.com You don’t have to be a geek to want to save your money and download programs for free. Here are 5 of my quick picks for open source software. My site – www.nixiepixel.com You may be wondering; What is Open Source? Open source generally refers to software that is released with open source code and no restrictions on downloading, modifying or advertising the work. An open source program usually starts when developers publish their code where other developers can learn about it, download it, and play with it. Where do you come in? You can reap all the benefits of course by using the application for no cost to you. Here is where you can download the programs mentioned in the video (in order) Firefox: www.mozilla.com OpenOffice: www.openoffice.org GIMP: www.gimp.org Pidgin: www.pidgin.im Video Editing Software: KDenLive: www.kdenlive.org (for Linux) Avidemux: fixounet.free.fr (for Windows) Thanks and hope you enjoyed! @mikepep33 It doesn’t support the freedom to sell software though, does it?

Almost all of the software I use is open-source, and I’ve made (miniscule) contributions to open-source software in the past, but I don’t think it’s fair to demonise those who wish to make money from writing software by selling it.

Stallman seems to characterise closed-source as unethical, but is it really wrong for someone to release a program without the source code so that they can profit a bit from their work?

No, it does give the freedom to sell the software. Freedoms 2 and 3 allow the software to be distributed, and that can have a price to it. And most of the software you use meets the definition of free software, if you say that you use all open source. Most of the time, open source software meets the 4 freedoms of free software. Many are also released under the GNU General Public License.

  6. batlin says:

@mikepep33 Yes, technically the software can be sold, but if the software is open-source and free, who is going to buy it, other than people who don’t know any better (e.g. when people who took a free program, JBidwatcher, renamed it and sold it)?

I don’t really worry about programmers who are concerned about making money. There are loads of programmers in this world who write software simply because of their love for programming and for users to live in freedom; the software is of high quality and often just as good as the proprietary alternatives. I don’t have concern for workers for Microsoft, Apple, etc. They have enough money for their next million meals anyway.

  9. batlin says:

@mikepep33 Indeed, that is why I use free software for the most part. However, programmers who want to write software “simply because of their love of programming” can’t do that on a full time basis, since they need money to live.
Most programmers are not Microsoft/Apple and don’t have enough money for their next million meals :D

i have been using xubuntu for the past month and just reinstalled windows xp on my ancient machine, my whole linux experience was ruined by the lack of effective advice, as i could not get the wifi to work, it was dodgy on windows as it was, but there was no right click, repair as there was in windows thus no internet. also, windows still holds the mainstream game market, otherwise i would convert to ubuntu full time

Nixiepixel how are you doing those awesome effects like the icons that go around you and stuff like that? I really like all your videos and are very friendly.

There seems to be some fundamental confusion regarding what ‘Open Source’ actually is. As a term, open source just means that the end user has access to the program’s source code. It does *not* mean that it’s free (as in, you don’t need to pay for it), nor does it mean there are no restrictions regarding what to do with it (inded, the GPL has several restrictions on how to employ its software’s source code).

May not be the most impressive OS application but it reminds me of Winamp and the name is Audacious and is available from the ubuntu reposteries =). Just wish though that there was a good alternative to Microsoft Visio.

    1. For audio editing I like Ardour and I recently installed Hydrogen.
    2. For video editing I am learning Cinelerra. It seems really cool but I have a ways before I become proficient.
    3. I did some online live audio streaming on talkshoe.com but now I found Rivendell but I have not yet been successful installing it. My Linux is openSUSE.
    4. Joomla is a really nice web page content management system and I use it for my web page.

Opensource is absolutely for me because I am poor, lol.

  17. PatrioticOhioan says:

    @astrochelonian
True, Ardour is a good example. It is a great program and they ask for donations to pay a programmer to continue working on it.

So even if anyone donates just a few dollars it can still add up for all of these great people that write all of the open source software.

Check out the gimpshop development. It helps people coming from photoshop to its open source variant. It uses gimp, but makes it look more like photoshop.
